The Odisha FC midfielder has landed in Abu Dhabi for a two-week-long training camp as the Islanders prepare for their first AFC Champions League campaign.

Mumbai City FC has started training in Al Forsan where they will train before heading off to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia for the Group Stages of the 2022 AFC Champions League, which will begin from the 8th of April, 2022.

Vinit Rai moved to Mumbai City FC on loan till the end of the season on January 5th. The 24-year-old has played 70 Hero ISL matches so far in his career representing Kerala Blasters, Delhi Dynamos, and Odisha FC. He has been a part of the Bhubaneswar-based side since its inception in 2019 and was selected as one of the captains in the ongoing eighth season of the League. Vinit, a graduate of the Tata Football Academy, had also represented Dempo SC and Minerva Punjab FC earlier in his career.

Since joining MCFC, Vinit has 9 appearances for the Islanders with 14 tackles (/90 minutes), 0.38 interceptions (/90minutes), and a passing accuracy of 81% (/90 minutes). He has been influential in the midfield playing alongside Jahouh and Apuia.

This is what MCFC Head Coach, Des Buckingham had to say about the Indian International on his arrival: "Vinit is an experienced footballer. He is one of the top players in his position and knows exactly what it takes to be successful in the ISL. Vinit’s arrival gives us more options in the middle of the park and we’re confident he can add value to what we’re trying to do here in Mumbai City. Having spoken to him, I know that he is a thorough professional. Vinit knows what we expect from him and I am sure he will make a mark in his time with us.”

The Islanders just missed out on securing a spot in the ISL playoffs by finishing 5th on the league table with 31 points to their name. Drawn in Group B in the West Region of the 2022 AFC Champions League, Mumbai City FC will square off against the likes of Al Jazira (UAE), Al Shabab (Saudi Arabia), and Air Force Club (Iraq).
