Odisha FC lost in the IWL quarter-finals to Gokulam Kerala on penalties

In a tightly contested match, Odisha FC lost 3-0 in a penalty shootout to Gokulam Kerala, after a 1-1 full-time score at TransStadia, Ahmedabad in the Hero IWL quarterfinal on May 16th.

The game started on a positive note for Odisha FC as they quickly took the lead in the 3rd minute. Anju Tamang's corner kick found Bala Devi, who confidently converted the chance with a header, giving Odisha FC an early advantage. 
 


Building on their early momentum, Odisha FC displayed exceptional defensive prowess, preventing Gokulam Kerala from registering a single shot on goal in the normal time of the first half. Gokulam Kerala struggled to find an equalizer and it was only in injury time of the first half that Roja Devi managed to break through Odisha FC's resolute defense, leveling the score with a well-placed shot into the top corner.
 

The second half started with a sending-off when the referee showed a 2nd yellow card to the Gokulam defender Ranjana Chanu. However, Gokulam Kerala's solid defensive performance proved to be a tough barrier, thwarting Odisha FC's attempts to regain the lead. Despite their relentless efforts, Odisha FC couldn't find the breakthrough and the match eventually moved into a penalty shootout to determine the winner.
 


In the nail-biting penalty shootout, Gokulam Kerala displayed exceptional composure, converting all three of their spot-kicks with precision. Unfortunately for Odisha FC, luck was not on their side as they missed their first three penalty attempts. The shoutout ended with a 3-0 victory for Gokulam.
 

Despite the loss, Odisha FC can hold their heads high, having put up a strong performance throughout the match. Their journey in the Hero IWL may have ended, but they displayed great character and talent. By finishing in the top 4 of their group stage, Odisha FC has also secured their automatic qualification for the next season's IWL.
