Odisha FC stun Bengaluru FC with a Comeback Win at the Kanteerava
The Kalinga Warriors scripted a much-needed turnaround to secure their first win in five games, with a 3-2 victory over Bengaluru FC at the Sri Kanteerava Stadium on Wednesday. The Kalinga Warriors completed their first-ever league double over the Blues, in what was Sergio Lobera’s first win at the ground as a manager and also the club's first win at the Kanteerava in the ISL History.
Despite trailing by two goals within the first 13 minutes, the Kalinga Warriors mounted a resilient comeback, led by Diego Mauricio’s brace and Jerry Mawihmingthanga’s second-half winner.
The match began chaotically, with three yellow cards issued in the first eight minutes to Ryan Williams (Bengaluru FC), Rahul KP, and Jerry Mawihmingthanga (Odisha FC). Bengaluru seized early momentum as Edgar Mendez converted Suresh Singh’s assist in the 10th minute, followed by a spectacular Sunil Chhetri strike from an Alberto Noguera pass just three minutes later. The home side looked set to end a miserable run, but a red card for Aleksandar Jovanovic turned the game on its head.
The Australian defender was sent off for a reckless challenge in the 26th minute, which resulted in a penalty for Odisha that Diego Mauricio calmly converted. He struck again from the spot in the 38th minute after another foul, leveling the scores before the break.
The second half saw Odisha maintain momentum. Jerry Mawihmingthanga netted the decisive goal in the 50th minute after a clever sequence of play, from a looped in ball from Hugo Boumous. Bengaluru’s defence failed to recover, leaving the home crowd stunned.
With this win, Odisha climbed to sixth in the standings with 24 points from 17 matches. They return to Bhubaneswar to host NorthEast United FC at the Kalinga Stadium in their next fixture set to take place on the February 3, 2025, kicking off at 7.30 PM IST.
