Odisha FC has registered a historic win by 3-1 goals against Bengaluru FC in its season opener in the ongoing Hero Indian Super League 2021-22 (Hero ISL 2021-22) in Goa. Javi Hernandez (3’, 51’) scored a brace while Aridai Cabrera (90+5’) got his maiden ISL goal at Tilak Maidan, Vasco while Alan Costa was the goal scorer for BFC. Goalkeeper Kamaljit Singh also had a brilliant day at the office and was one of the stars for the Bhubaneswar-based side in the encounter.

A miss pass from Gurpreet Singh in the third minute of the match found Javi outside the BFC box. The Spaniard was calm and composed as he managed to chip the ball over Gurpreet’s head to score the opening goal of the season for the Juggernauts. Odisha FC looked dominant for the next few minutes after that.

In the 20th minute when BFC looked dangerous and Costa’s chip was on target, defender Hector Rodas came to the rescue and headed the ball out off the goal line. However, in the next minute, Roshan Naorem’s corner kick was headed into the goalpost by Costa and BFC came back into the game with an equalizer. The first half ended with a 1-1 scoreline and not a lot happened in the remaining 20 odd minutes after the BFC goal.

Six minutes into the second half, Odisha FC got a free-kick at a dangerous position and Javi was brilliant again. His free-kick was right on target and Gurpreet had no chance whatsoever to stop that. Odisha was back in the lead and both the teams made a few substitutions.

Bengaluru substitute Cleiton Silva entered the OFC box in the 61st minute and managed to win a penalty. However, captain Sunil Chhetri’s effort was saved by Kamaljit Singh. Silva scored on the rebound but it was disallowed as he had stepped in the area before the kick was taken by the BFC skipper. The OFC custodian continued his top performance in the remaining passage of the game and made as many as three crucial saves to deny BFC an equalizer in the second half.

In the injury time, Aridai, who had come in as a substitute and was making his ISL debut, showed his skill and class inside the Bengaluru box. He got the ball from Isaac Vanmalsawma on the left flank, evaded his man with ease, and slotted the ball past the goalie to double the lead for Odisha FC before the full-time whistle.

Odisha FC will now take on neighbors SC East Bengal on Tuesday in their second game of the eighth season of the Hero ISL.
