Born in the rolling hills of Salamanca by the Tormes River, Javi signed for Real Madrid's youth setup in 2005 when he was 16 years old. He went on to make his senior debut for Real Madrid Castilla in 2008-09 in Segunda Division B.

Hernandez then moved on loan to Halmstads BK in Sweden where he scored 2 goals in 9 appearances. He returned in the summer as he continued to compete in the third tier the following years with Salamanca, CD Ourense & Burgos CF with 124 appearances and 23 goals to his name.

Shortly after in 2016 Javi joined Górnik ลฤ™czna. In 2017, he moved to Azerbaijan Premier League club Gabala FK on a one-year contract with an optional second year but left shortly after and returned to the Polish side Ekstraklasa with KS Cracovia.

After winning the title with ATK in 2019 where he scored 2 goals in the final to lift the trophy with the Kolkata giants, Javi made a switch to the Juggernauts to don the black & purple colors.

The Spaniard was phenomenal in delivering success for Odisha FC. Be it his passing, crosses, or his finishing, Hernandez had his own panache when he was on the ball. With six goals and five assists, the midfielder was the second-highest goalscorer and the top assist provider for Odisha FC. What’s unique to his six goals this season is all those goals have come from outside the box, and to add to it, his six goals are the highest number of goals scored from outside the box by any player in any season of the Hero ISL. In terms of goal contributions, the 32-year-old became the first Odisha FC player to contribute five or more goals and five or more assists in the same season of the Hero ISL, proving an unparalleled asset for Odisha FC.

Javi featured in 19 matches for the Juggernauts where he played a total of 1497 minutes in which he scored 6 goals and 5 assists. He took 49 shots on goal, crossed the ball 34 times, and passed it 556 times. He was instrumental in Odisha FC's attacking prowess in the midfield as he amassed 804 touches with a passing accuracy of 66.54% averaging 29.26 passes per game.

Having spent a considerable amount of time with the No.10 in the bio-bubble Javi is a very humble, down-to-earth, reserved kind of a guy. You can hear him vent in frustration when he loses in FIFA across the team bubble and has taken the lives of a few controllers in the process now & then. In the training sessions, you get to see a very different side to the Spaniard as he immerses himself into perfecting his craft while also helping the team improve in the attacking phase of the game. Wearing a smile on his face even though things are tough he reassures everyone that everything is going to be alright and radiates positivity to the entire team. A top professional in every aspect. We will definitely look forward to seeing the Merlin enthrall us all with his magic at the Kalinga Stadium in front of our fans.
