Odisha FCW seek redemption in derby against Nita FA

After suffering back-to-back defeats in their last two home games against East Bengal FC and Gokulam Kerala FC, Odisha FCW now prepare to face a crucial derby against NITA FA in the Indian Women’s League (IWL) on Friday, March 21.

Despite the recent setbacks, Odisha FCW head coach Crispin Chettri remains optimistic and focused on turning the tide with his young squad. This season, Odisha FCW has shown promise, but a series of unfortunate injuries to key players — including Grace and Tanvi — have hampered their progress. Chettri confirmed the latest injury concerns, stating: “As of now, I think Shreya is out for this game, but we are waiting for the MRI reports. Let's see if she will play for the season or not.”

The injury crisis has raised questions about Odisha FCW’s midfield, which seems to be struggling in comparison to last season’s setup.

Asked about the team's midfield woes, Chettri said: “I know we have a very young side this season, but the issue isn’t just that. Grace’s injury has been a major setback for us. She’s a crucial player who understands our system well. If we talk about the midfield, there’s no experienced player to fill her shoes right now. However, when we moved Eli to the defense and midfield, we looked more composed in the past two games, though bringing her to midfield creates a loophole at the back, so we are training well, let's see in this match.”

Despite the team’s struggles, Odisha FCW have shown determination to keep fighting. When asked about their position in the table and whether it’s too late to turn things around, Chettri said: “In football, we can’t predict the result until the league ends. All we can do is win all the matches ahead of us. Although the chances are slim, we must keep a positive mindset and keep fighting for every point.”

Odisha FCW star Jasoda Munda acknowledged the disappointment of losing six crucial points in the last two matches but is determined to stay positive ahead of this crucial encounter. She said: “Yes, we were champions last season and our performance was exceptional, but this season has been a little down, especially with the losses in our last two matches. It’s been tough, but we know we have to keep our mindset strong and aim to win all our remaining games.”

Despite the recent setbacks, the mood in the Odisha FCW dressing room remains upbeat. Jasoda shared her thoughts on the team’s spirit: “We know we lost six important points, but for this game against NITA FA, our mindset is strong. We’re positive, even with some players injured. We’ve been training hard and giving our 100%. Our focus is clear – we aim to win every match from here on out.”
